The Elephant’s (very distant) Cousin
The Dugong is a marine mammal closely related to a Manatee.
Though the Dugong has a flat tail and flippers like a whale, it is more closely related to an elephant. Scientists believe the Dugong has evolved 50 to 60 million years ago, when an elephant-like creature entered shallow water to graze, eventually spending more and more time in the ocean.
They eventually evolved to spend their whole life in the sea.
